Japan's Fukuda in a fight for his life

Critics refer to the issue as the negative legacy of Koizumi's market-friendly reforms. On the day of his inauguration in late September, Fukuda himself called his team a ''do-or-die'' cabinet. He also said at the time that his cabinet has "its back against the wall". More specifically, "That is to say if [the cabinet] fails, the LDP will be ousted from power," he said.

In the new year, Fukuda is a toshi otoko - literally ''a man of the year' - as those men born in a year with the same Oriental zodiac sign as the current year are commonly referred to in Japan. The 71-year-old Fukuda, the eldest son of former Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, was born in July 1936, also the Year of the Rat.

At this time it is impossible to tell whether 2008 will be a lucky year for the prime minister.

Meat processors assure stable prices during the holidays

The local meat processing industry is assuring the public of stable prices of ham, bacon, hotdogs and other processed meat products this Christmas season.

The Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc. (PAMPI) which include big corporate players like San Miguel Foods, Purefoods and RFM-Swift, said prices of hams, bacons, corned beef, and hotdogs have not moved by wide swings over the last four years and this year will not be any different.

According to PAMPI executive director Francisco Buencamino, the cheapest ham product in the market is the pear-shaped ham selling under P200 per piece of about a kilo.

“This was the same price level of a year ago, and the year before that," Buen-camino added.

PAMPI is prepared to sell its products in consumer-friendly barangay food terminals (BFTs) set up by the Department of Agriculture across Metro Manila so consumers can avail themselves of processed meat items at prices lower than those sold in regular retail outlets.

Feds launch criminal investigation into San Francisco oil spill

Nearly 200 dead birds have been recovered from the bay, while another 465 birds have been rescued alive but oiled, according to Lisa Curtis, administrator of Department of Fish and Games office of spill prevention and response. See photos of oil coating the bay »

The crew was new to the ship, which was built six years ago in South Korea but purchased just last month by the current owner, Hersman said. They were on their first voyage in the vessel, she said.

The U.S. attorney in San Francisco opened a criminal investigation over the weekend to see if federal maritime laws may have been violated by the captain and crew, Allen said. "The vessel is detained in port under a captain of the port order because it is unsafe to sail."

Several beaches and shorelines were closed to the public and fishing was banned in certain locations on Port of San Francisco property.

Minister of Neo Political Correctness from West Palm Beach, United States writes Have we EVER treated one of your PM's in such a shabby manor? --------That would require most Americans to have a clue as to what's beyond their borders. It's hard to protest the leader of another country and watch the latest news on Britney and Lindsay at the same time. GWB is standing up to islamofacism (I used that before he did). -----Yes he's fighting it so well by abandoning the prime terror target in Afghanistan and starting a non related, oil war in Iraq. You call it fighting terror. The world calls is taking your eye off the ball. YOU were first in WW1 and 2 yet now we hear the calls "honest broker" which mean the destruction of Israel. ---We weren't first in these wars but we were well ahead of you. Those were just wars because most Canadians came from lands directly involved in the conflict.

Burton Tried Bold Move at Daytona

02-20) 14:40 PST Darlington, S.C. (AP) --

With three laps to go, Jeff Burton knew he needed something bold and unconventional to keep his lead at the Daytona 500.

So Burton kept low on the last restart, hoping to hold off Kyle Busch's charging Toyota. Instead, Busch went lower to slide by Burton while several cars, led by Busch's teammate, Tony Stewart, blew past the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in the high groove. Burton was left in the middle, without drafting help, and his chance at NASCAR's biggest race was all but done.

A short time later, Burton crossed the finish line 13th behind winner Ryan Newman.

"I tried to do something on the last restart that didn't work very well," Burton said Wednesday at Darlington Raceway.
