The Legacy of Bush II

This irrational spending spree, which accounts for more than half of all federal discretionary spending, is not likely to end with Bush's departure. Which one of the likely winners from either party would lead the battle to cut the military budget, and where would the winner find support in Congress? Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have treated the military budget as sacrosanct with their Senate votes and their campaign rhetoric. Clinton is particularly clear on the record as favoring spending more, not less, on the military.

John McCain, who previously distinguished himself as a deficit hawk and was almost in a class by himself in taking on the rapacious defense contractors, has thrown in the towel with his inane support for staying in Iraq till "victory," even if it should take a century.

Stocks lower in mid-trade on Wall St fall, political noise

Stocks were lower in mid-trade Tuesday after Wall Street's retreat overnight and because of fresh political noise arising from the ouster of Speaker Jose de Venecia, analysts said.

At 10:40 a.m., the main index was down 33.71 points or 1 percent at 3,289.54.

The broader all-share index was also down 18.12 points or 0.89 percent at 1,997.55.

"The market is known for its sensitivity to political noise. The change in speakership is definitely a cause for concern especially since it all started with allegations of corruption involving government officials," an analyst who refused to be named said.

De Venecia lost his position in a vote of 174 against 35, with 16 abstentions. Davao City 1st district Rep. Prospero Nograles was then elected as speaker of the House of Representatives.

So Bad it’s Good

Whats wrong with it? For one thing, it just cant settle on a tone. Its ostensibly a comedy, but it also crams in thriller, romantic comedy, drama and even musical elements (Willis and Aiello commit robbery to Swinging on a Star and Side by Side). It is possible to cross comedy with other genres gracefully Planes, Trains and Automobiles is perhaps the best example but Hudson Hawk is a pigs breakfast, chopping and changing to suit the screenwriters whims. (Four people, including Willis and Commando scribe Steven E. de Souza, helped develop the story).

No doubt the physical gags played a large part in its sour critical reception. A paralysed Andie McDowell being carried away like a rag doll, a mean little dog chasing its ball out of a high window, James Coburn kicking Willis back and forth like a spring-mounted punching bag, Willis coughing up chicken feathers its like parts of Airplane! have been stitched into an otherwise regulation comedy.
